Archiving does not happen by itself. Digital materials are surprisingly fragile because their profitability depends on the technologies that are changing quickly and constantly.
Many valuable paper materials collected for decades are poorly visited, what does not happen with the digital archive. Of course there is no digital equivalent to the old, worth a pile of paper materials. But digital archive provides lasting value and remains accessible and usable.
So on demand from our user, who has a weekly magazine, we created a digital archive of 50-year-old material. After the scanning process, we slipped digital documents through OCR to get searchable digital archive. By typing a keyword (that we've indexed through all the documents) we get a date, edition number and display pages on which that word appears.
